Menkemaborg

Uithuizen – Uithuizen features one of the most beautiful preserved Groningen manors. Take in all its splendour as you walk the avenues and explore the museum. Originally built as a fortified house in the fourteenth century, over the next centuries it was enlarged and transformed into the early-eighteenth-century Baroque house you see today. You’ll find the rooms fully decorated with fine furniture, silver, porcelain, copper work and portraits.

The leaning tower of Bedum

Bedum – Few people are aware that Bedum features a tower that leans even more than the tower of Pisa. The construction of the Walfridus tower started in the early twelfth century. It was named after the saint who was on a walking pilgrimage to Groningen with his son Radfridus. Around the year 1,000, he was killed by Vikings, and was buried here.

Warfhuizen hermitage

Warfhuizen – In 2001, the old church of Warfhuizen was converted into a traditional hermitage with a chapel. Over time, the church changed into a place of pilgrimage and was eventually acknowledged as such. The number of people coming to visit has been increasing year after year, with pilgrims coming from far and wide. However, it is actually still home to a hermit.

Open-air museum

Warffum – See the past come to life in the very heart of the village of Warffum, located in the north of Groningen. In Het Hoogeland open-air museum, learn more about what the countryside was like a century ago. Check out the twenty old buildings to see and feel what life and work was like here. With the living rooms and bedrooms decorated in great detail, everything here looks as if the inhabitants have just stepped out and can return any minute. A great outing for any age.

Eemshaven – The Goliath: monument to water and wind. The vast Emmapolder and dynamic Eemshaven are connected as they were always meant to be. Come and experience the space and tranquillity around the Goliath polder draining-mill – used to transport water from a lower to a higher area.

The church is located at the highest point of the artificial mound (5 meters above sea level). The church is built in 1889 on the foundations of the old abbey church. The church is open for visitors all days of the week, free of charge.
